The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has thousands of congregations (called “wards”) all over the world. A stake is a group of local wards, generally five to ten, and combined consists of about 3,000 to 5,000 members. 

The word comes from the biblical prophet Isaiah, who compared gathering God’s people to building a large tent. He wrote, “Lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes” (Isaiah 54:2).
